A single slip may cause lasting sorrow”, a Chinese proverb says. This is especially so when dealing with human relationships so vulnerable and delicate that any wrong move will cause irreversible consequences.

Fred Cheng’s recent Cantonese song, “The End of the World” (地盡頭) talks about a person who carries sorrow and pain so deep and heavy that it felt like he could not escape from it, and would follow him to the end of the world.

The song is written by lyrist Sandy Chang, where she uses many metaphors to subtly express a person’s regrets and sadness over one mistake he made ten years ago that has led his girlfriend to leave him. He sees desires and gains like a thick wall that separates him and others; he buried his past, yet pain is still desperately finding a way out; his feelings for her are piling like thick snow; and he wished his heart is made of stone so that he would not feel pain. The feelings are also beautifully expressed through the melodies, which is composed by Damon Chui, where he uses the melancholic yet dramatic string instruments to bring out the desperation to move on.

The video featured Fred as the protagonist, where he is seen wearing a black hoodie, singing sorrowfully against a black backdrop, before finding himself awaking on an empty street. He then runs on the street, seemingly trying to escape from something. He gets up and continue to run even when he falls. This painted a realistic picture of a person continuously trying to run away from an emotional baggage, and will keep going on until the emotions could find “its way out”.

The End of the World” is also the ending theme song of Hong Kong television drama Provocateur (與諜同謀).
