The pain of heartbreak rings clear in Yesung’s new ballad, Paper Umbrella, from the mini album Spring Falling. Its bittersweet melody coupled with soft, emotion-filled vocals draw us in to the familiar feeling of heartache.

In the lyrics, Yesung describes the pain of a breakup, recalling the rainy day on which it happened. He sings about how the relationship ended badly because he hadn’t treated the one he loved very well. Every night, he relives the day he lost her, feeling that he is once again in the rain, under a paper umbrella.

The music video sets a melancholy tone as it opens, with raindrops that hint towards the lyrics of the song. The story is told in a series of flashbacks. We see the couple as they were young, playing in the rain, and using newspaper as a “paper umbrella”. These happy scenes are bright and cheerful, marking their distinction from the dimly lit, sadder moments after the breakup. An older version of the man is seen playing old videotapes of the girl he loved as she danced in the rain under an umbrella. The final flashback shows us the moment Yesung sings of reliving, where he and the girl he loved parted ways on a rainy day, under umbrellas.

Take a listen to the new mini album, Spring Falling, as Yesung will tug at your heart with his airy, silky voice.
